The SUPER WHITES' year-long unbeaten
home run came to an end last night as Wolves, unbeaten in their last
four games, became the first visitors to win at Craven Cottage since
Luton Town on Oct 3 last year.
The defeat also meant we missed the chance to go top of Division One
for the first time in 16 years!!
Of the two sides Fulham made the best start with Wolves looking as if
they were just there to make up the numbers. Due to Wolves defensive
approach it took some twenty minutes before we made a good goal scoring
chance.
Although there was no obvious reason at the time on 23 minutes Karl
the German went off in favour of Peschy who fizzed like a rocket all
round the pitch for the rest of the game. Coming off pasta seemed to
suit him.
Just after Peschy came on Maik Taylor had climbed to collect the ball
from a corner and he sent Gus Uhlenbeek on one of his rocket-assisted
charges down the wing. Gus put the ball into Lee Clark who made a quality
on target shot but the ball hit the post and the Wolves defence smothered
the rebound.
I suppose we should have known then that it was going to be one of those
nights. Fulham played good exciting football but regardless of what
the boys did the ball would not go in.
Wolves didn't put us under any real pressure until just before the end
of the first half when Maik Taylor had to palm Muscat's effort over
the bar.
As the first half ended we tried to take the lead with massed attacks
the best of which saw Paul Trollope blast the ball over the bar. It
would have been easier to score.
High point of half time was a little lad, only as high as the ball,
who taking part in the penalty shoot seemed to be endlessly dragged
around the pitch by the ball.
Again we made the brightest start to the second half but with 12 minutes
gone Wolves made their second attack of the game and Maik Taylor seemed
to be okay with a fierce 25 yarder from Osborn but just like one of
those slow motion sequences in a horror film the ball took on a life
of it's own, floated on to the foot of Osborn and then rebounded into
the goal. Talk about stunned I'm sure time stopped.
The boy's upped the tempo and Brace took off Alan Neilson and put on
"Bazza" Hayles.
The rest of the game was a succession of attacks by Fulham with only
Maik Taylor staying in the Fulham half.
The Ref. eventually sorted Pollet out for trying to insert himself into
Super Geoff, who had suffered silently throughout the match unlike recently.
Mind you the reason for his good behaviour, and lack of sparkle may
have been that he had not fully recovered from his bout of flu.
In the last twenty minutes it was all Fulham but the ball would not
go in. Wayne Collins made a spectacular effort to score but to no avail,
there was a goal mouth scramble with virtually all the Fulham players
trying to put the ball in.
With all the attacking football and near misses the disappointment of
a defeat seemed to be some how muted. We will play worse this year and
still win. It was good to see the players come over to the Hammersmith
end and still got an ovation.
Well done lads shame about the result.
