'Nearly man' Lloyd was unlucky to miss out on several major honours, including an England Schoolboy cap. He did captain Fulham's promotion side of 1971 but lost the chance of a Championship medal on the last day of the season.

A fringe player at first club Chelsea, he joined Fulham in February 1969 for £35,000 in an exchange deal which took John Dempsey to Stamford Bridge: manager Bill Dodgin made him captain and gave him Johnny Haynes' old Number 10 shirt.

He made 277 appearances as a hard- working midfield player up to 1976, but again missed out on the big occasion in 1975. He spent Cup Final day on the substitutes' bench after playing in some of the earlier rounds.

Barry moved to Hereford United in 1976 and then on to Brentford, also playing briefly for Houston Hurricane in the United States. Lloyd managed Yeovil for three seasons before becoming manager of Worthing, whom he took from the Second Division to runners-up in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. Barry became Alan Mullery's assistant at Brighton in May 1986 and then his successor in January 1987, taking them to runners-up spot in Division Three in 1988.

Barry died in September 2024 at the age of 75. R.I.P.
