2nd eleven to try again

Jean Tigana is likely to field another weakened Fulham side against Northampton in the first round, second leg of the Worthington Cup.

Despite trailing 1-0 from the first leg at Sixfields, where the Cottagers fielded an unrecognisable side from that which has soared to the top of the First Division, Tigana will give his youngsters and reserves another chance to oust the Second Division new-boys.

Reserves such as Wayne Collins, Kevin Betsy and Marcus Hahnemann, part of the side which went down in the Midlands, could get the chance to redeem themselves in front of their own fans.

Fulham beat Northampton 5-2 at the same stage of the competition last season with Geoff Horsfield scoring a hat-trick.

The Cottagers progressed as far as the quarter-finals - equalling their best-ever performance in the League Cup - before being eliminated by eventual winners Leicester City.

Meanwhile the Cobblers are aiming to finish off Fulham.

Manager Kevin Wilson is delaying naming his side until the last minute but club captain Ian Sampson may return after missing three games with a broken hand.

Garry Hughes will continue in the side if Sampson fails to recover. Wilson said: "We'll go down there looking to do a good job and progress into round two."
