Fulham's Latvian star Andrejs Stolchers has
been selected again for the National side and is likely to start in the
World Cup qualifier against Belgium on Saturday evening.
Latvia's newly-appointed Russian coach Alexanders Starkovs did his best
to speak in Latvian throughout Friday's press conference as he looked to
score some early points with the Latvian media, who had such a big say in
the departure of Englishman Gary Johnson.
Changes have been forced upon the coach. as Metalurgs pair Dzintars Zirnis
and Viktors Dobrecovs are both unavailable through injury, as is the Skonto
Riga goalkeeper Andris Piedels and Ventspils wing-back Viktors Lukashevichs
and Skonto forward Alexandrs Eliseevs have been left out of the party.
The most interesting newcomer to the squad is right full-back Alexander
Isakovs, who plays in Russia for Volgar-Gazprom.
Starkovs warned that his players will be instructed to play a containing
game against the dangerous Belgians, and singled out Emile Mpenza and Marc
Wilmots as the main threats.
Belgium will go top of the group with a win, as leaders Scotland are not
in action.
Latvia (probable): Kolinko, Isakovs, Stepanovs, Zakreshevskis, Blagonadezdins,
Astafjevs, Rubins, Laizans, Stolcers, Verpakovskis, Pahars
