Barnsley v Fulham - Match Preview

last updated Saturday 10th February 2001, 9:30 AM
The Whites will be trying to improve on last Sunday's 1-1 draw against Sheffield United as they seek to extend their 10-point advantage at the top of the table.

Player-coach John Collins returned from a hamstring injury when he played for the reserves this week but he still needs more games before he will come into contention for first-team action.

Striker Barry Hayles will come into contention for a place in the squad after missing the last month of the season with an ankle injury.

On-loan Danish striker Peter Moller is expected to remain on the substitutes' bench despite his goal for the reserves in midweek with Luis Boa Morte and Louis Saha once again being paired up front.

Barnsley first-team coach Derek Fazackerley has tipped the Tykes to upset Fulham at Oakwell - if the players continue to wear their hearts on their sleeves.

The Division One strugglers gleaned a priceless point from the battling 0-0 draw at Blackburn last weekend and Fazackerley believes the key to success against the runaway leaders is a repeat performance.

He said: "I'm sure that if the players show the commitment and resolve that they showed in that match, there's every possibility we'll get a result against Fulham - but it won't be easy.

Nigel Spackman's assistant certainly believes the Cottagers have Premiership credentials. He added: "They've had an outstanding season so far. There's no doubt about it - they are the form team and the best team in the division.

"But we've got to get as many points as we possibly can as early as we possibly can so that we don't have a nervy end to the season."

Barnsley have steered clear of any new injuries this week, with Steve Hayward working hard in training as he prepares for the visit of the club he left last month.

Fazackerley said: "I would think that Steve will want to prove one or two things to the Fulham people."
