Clint Dempsey has praised the 'character' of the Fulham players after they battled to secure a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Boxing Day.

The USA international cancelled out Juan Mata's goal for the hosts to grab an equaliser and ultimately secured an important point for Martin Jol's men at Stamford Bridge just days after they were thumped 5-0 at home against Manchester United.

And, Dempsey felt the players proved their worth in the face of adversity in the London derby.

He said "It's always difficult to get points away from home especially after losing in the fashion we did last week.

"It was important to go out and show a lot of character [against Chelsea]. We want to keep pushing on and moving up the table. It was good to get a point.

"We worked on getting the right balance of when to get forward and get our screens right. I thought we did a good job of keeping possession in important parts of the game to give ourselves a little breather.

"All in all we were happy with the point. We would have liked to have done better with their goal, letting him [Mata] get the shot off the way he did, but I thought we showed character getting the equaliser.

"Bryan Ruiz did a good job of beating his man and getting the ball to the near post and I just tried to make a late run into the box and I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time to finish it off."
