Elvis Hammond on loan to Rovers

last updated Friday 31st August 2001, 3:57 PM
Ghanaian-born striker Elvis Hammond has joined Rovers on a month's loan from Fulham after impressing Gerry Francis in a reserve game.

The 20-year-old forward, who was born in Accra, is keen to get first-team football as he is well behind the likes of Louis Saha and Barry Hayles in the pecking order at the Premiership club.

He has answered Gerry Francis's plea for new options up front following the injury to Nathan Ellington. Hammond has never featured for The Cottagers in league football but did play for them in a Worthington Cup second round clash at Chesterfield last season.

"I've been at Fulham for 4 years now, briefly as a schoolboy, and then as a trainee before signing a pro contract," Hammond told the Rovers official website.

"However, there are a number of top-class strikers at the club and first team opportunities are limited. Nevertheless, it's a good experience playing and training with them, as you learn so much from them and they have undoubtedly helped me improve my game."

Hammond has been snapped up by Francis after the Rovers boss saw him in action for Fulham's second string in midweek.

Hammond said: "I was on the bench for the game, but got on for half an hour and scored a goal. The next morning, my manager told me that Rovers were interested in taking me on a one-month loan.

"After weighing up my options, I decided that it would be a good move for me. It's a great opportunity for me to play first team football.

"I've come here to play as many games as possible. I enjoy scoring goals and I've done quite well so far this season and I'm looking forward to playing for Rovers."
