England keeper scared of McBride

Norwich City keeper Robert Green has one big wish ahead of England's summer tour opener against the USA at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday - please don't let Brian McBride score!

Though England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed overnight that he will start this weekend's clash with David James as his No 1, Green could yet make his first full international appearance as a second-half substitute.

All of which would leave him face to face with the man who helped bury his dreams of Premiership survival at Craven Cottage.

“It would be nice to stop him this time if I get on the pitch,” said Green ruefully, after McBride's two-goal blast for his Premiership employers Fulham contributed hugely to one of the darkest days in the 25-year-old's Norwich career.

Whether Green gets his Windy City reunion with McBride and Carlos Bocanegra will, of course, depend on whether Eriksson is intent on wholesale changes at the interval or whether the Swede will keep his powder dry for Tuesday night's clash with Colombia in New Jersey.

And while the Fulham pair may be the only familiar names on Saturday's teamsheet, Green has been Stateside long enough to realise that England could have a game on their hands.

“We know this game means a lot to them,” added Green. “They have a lot to prove on the world stage and beating England would probably been seen as a major scalp for them. But we have a lot of players trying to establish themselves and also prove a point, so it will be an interesting game.”
