LEEDS UNITED'S on-loan striker Geoff Horsfield admits to still being mystified over what went wrong during a frustrating six-month stint at Sheffield United.

The 32-year-old joined the Blades from West Brom last February – initially on loan with a permanent £1.2m deal then going through in the summer – but quickly fell out of favour at Bramall Lane.

Horsfield made just one start with two further appearances coming from the bench and United attempted to cancel their agreement with the Baggies in March only for the request to be refused.

The arrival of Rob Hulse from Leeds in a £2.1m deal this summer meant Horsfield slipped even further down Neil Warnock's pecking order and the six-month loan switch to Kevin Blackwell's side makes sense for all parties.

The former Halifax striker, pictured right, told the Yorkshire Post: "It is great to be at a club where I feel wanted and part of the squad.

"It has a been a difficult six months and I know my wife and kids will be glad I am at Leeds because the situation at Sheffield United was doing my head in. Saturdays are for playing football and yet I wasn't.

"I have spoken to a few people and they have said I did not do anything wrong. Neil Warnock just wanted to go back to his usual strikeforce and said he was not going to involve me.

"I still cannot work out why and I don't think many people in football can. But those type of decisions are down to a manager and you can't knock him because Sheffield United are now a Premiership club.

"I do not think I have anything to prove to him or Sheffield United.

"The people I have to prove something to are the Leeds fans.

"I am hoping they will see I am hard working and give 150 per cent, even if I am not playing at my best."

Horsfield started his career with Scarborough but after slipping out of the Football League to join Witton Albion he burst to prominence by scoring the goals that helped Halifax Town lift the Conference title in 1998.

He moved to Fulham for £300,000 six months later, chalking up another promotion success as the London club won the Second Division title.

A £2.25m switch to Birmingham followed in 2000 and during three years at St Andrews he helped the Blues into the Premiership.

The Barnsley-born striker repeated the trick with West Brom in 2004 and is determined to once again taste promotion success with his new club.

He said: "I have won promotion five times so far, if you include Sheffield United last season when I only played a couple of games, and for someone who only turned pro at the age of 24 that is not a bad CV.

"It is why I will never understand why Neil Warnock did not give me a chance. All I want to do now, though, is concentrate on doing well for Leeds. There was talk of me once coming to Leeds when I was a Fulham player, only for it to fall through because I got a bad calf injury. I was gutted so it is great to finally get this chance.

"I want to repay the manager and earn myself a permanent move."

United manager Kevin Blackwell added: "I let Rob Hulse go and with Richard Creswell not being fit, there was no doubt I needed more power up top and Geoff is proven.

"So much so that West Brom have tried to keep taking him back.

"He was obviously doing something right. If things go well we have got the option to complete something with Sheffield United."
