Preston have agreed a fee with Fulham for USA winger Eddie Lewis.
The First Division outift will now discuss personal terms with the 28-year-old as they attempt to lure him to Deepdale.
Preston have been linked with Lewis for several weeks and one report suggested they could not afford his wage demands.
"I don't want this to be a saga running every day in the papers," chairman Derek Shaw told the Lancashire Evening Post newspaper.
"We still have an interest in Lewis, although there is no further news to report."
Manager Craig Brown tracked the former San Jose Earthquakes midfielder throughout the World Cup in South Korea, watching all his games as the USA made it through to the quarter-finals.
He is keen to add a wide player to his squad and Lewis fits the bill perfectly.
