Fulham boss Martin Jol praised Fulham's comeback against Newcastle but was not happy with their Jekyll and Hyde performance following the 5-2 victory.

Fulham were 1-0 down at half-time but a second-half comeback inspired by a Clint Dempsey hat-trick saw a dramatic turnaround at Craven Cottage.

There were two penalties to add to the Cottagers' tally but Jol was critical of Fulham's first-half display at the final whistle.

"The first half was not good at all. We didn't create anything and we had no runners in midfield," he said.

"Of course we didn't have (Moussa) Dembele. We had to change the style.

"Five goals in 45 minutes is a lot so all compliments to my players but the first half was totally opposite.

"The first half was a horror scenario and the second half was sort of heaven."

Dempsey took the plaudits after three well-taken goals but it was the introduction of Andy Johnson and Chris Baird that appeared to turn the game around.

Jol added: "In the second half we decided to play a more direct style. The (half-time) score was not a problem, but the play was.

"Andy Johnson came on and then we were causing problems in behind. Luckily it came off.

"If we played it up to Bobby (Zamora) he lost it and we couldn't get the ball in behind.

"I wanted to change it at half-time, we had (Steven) Sidwell off and that probably affected our balance in midfield so I had to change it.

"The second half was like a holiday in Jamaica, there was an unbelievable difference."
