Fulham have beaten Rangers to the signing of Portsmouth centreback Dejan Stefanovic.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has reluctantly allowed Stefanovic to leave Fratton Park, as the 32-year-old had become a fringe player after four years as a regular.

Rangers boss Walter Smith believed the defender would be lured by the chance to play Champions League football, but Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez stole in.

Stefanovic said last night: "My agent spoke with Rangers and there was the option to go to Glasgow but once I spoke to Lawrie Sanchez I knew Fulham was the club for me.

"Lawrie has bought in a lot of players and I think the club has a very big future."

Fulham stated:
Fulham Football Club has today added defender Dejan Stefanovic to its summer signing tally, subject to the granting of a work permit. The Serbian International joins from Portsmouth on a two year deal for a fee of £1m.

32-year old Stefanovic began his career at Red Star Belgrade and made the move to the then top flight Sheffield Wednesday in 1995.

He went on to play for three years in Holland with Vitesse Arnhem prior to joining Pompey in July 2003, where he was handed the Captain’s armband during the 20056/2006 season.

Lawrie Sanchez said:
‘Dejan is a formidable defender with vast experience at both domestic and international levels. He reads the game well, is brave and knows the pace and strength of the Premiership, so I have no doubt that he will prove to be an asset for us over the coming months.

‘It’s been a busy transfer period for us and we have bought some real quality into the squad. It’s been a disappointing start for us in terms of the results, but I’m confident that we have a squad of players now that can go on and achieve things here.’
