Borussia Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios has revealed that he chose to stay at the club despite the lack of first-team chances as he did not want to let the fans down.

The Paraguaya striker was key in Dortmund claiming the Bundesliga title last season, finishing top of the club's scoring charts with 16 goals.

However, he has struggled to hold down a place in the first team after he missed the start of the season with an injury picked up at the Copa America and with teammate Robert Lewandowski in fine form.

It was widely speculated that he will leave the club in the January transfer window and was heavily linked with a move to Fulham, only for the move to fall through.

Barrios revealed that he rejected the move due to the fans' reaction when he came off the bench in Dortmund's match last weekend against Hoffenheim.

He said in Bild magazine: "Dortmund's financial demands have nothing to do with it. I stayed here because of the fans. The support they showed me last weekend made me realise that I shouldn't leave this club.

"I am completely focused on Borussia now, and I'm not thinking about a possible summer exit. I just want to be successful again here. I don't care about anything else at the moment."

Barrios has made only three starts for the club in the Bundesliga this season and has yet to score a goal in this campaign.
