Hertha Berlin general manager Dieter Hoeness has admitted they could sell Croatia defender Josip Simunic in the summer.
The Australian-born 31-year-old has repeatedly spoken of his desire to play in The Premier League, although he admitted earlier this month that he feared his chance may have passed.
He told DSF: “I don't know if this dream is over, but I am a Hertha player at the moment and I only focus on the next game.”
And it now appears that his good form could pave the way for a summer exit, with Hoeness saying he will have attracted the attention of the top clubs.
“There is a hidden danger because it could make other clubs aware of his existence,” he said in Bild.
“Joe is one of the best defenders in Europe.
“Not long ago, some people doubted he had the fitness to play in Bundlesiga – now he has shown what he can do.
“He is an outstanding talent.”
While Hoeness would be loath to lose Simunic, he accepts that cashing in could help the club to bring in new players – including the permanent signing of on-loan Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin.
“[Selling star players] is always a possibility so that we can fund new signings,” he said.
“By selling, we have the chance to build our squad.
“We can sell players and then spend smaller sums on quality new signings – it gives us a way forwards for the future.”
Simunic, who signed a five-year contract in 2006, has previously been linked to Chelsea and Fulham.
