Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of midfielder Jonathan Greening from Fulham.
The former West Brom favourite moves to the Championship club for an undisclosed fee and has signed a three-year contract.
Greening, 32, becomes the second signing of Steve McClaren's tenure at the City Ground, following the return of Andy Reid.
McClaren had previously worked with Greening first when he was at Manchester United as a youngster, before bringing the midfielder with him to Middlesbrough in 2001.
The Premier League veteran made the move to The Hawthorns in 2004, where he spent five years, becoming a fan favourite and club captain.
He moved to Fulham on loan for a season before joining permanently last summer. However, his first-team appearances were restricted under former boss Mark Hughes and he started only six Barclays Premier League games last season.
The experienced Greening is capable of playing anywhere across the midfield.
Greening today said he would love the honour of captaining Nottingham Forest - but only after he has earned the right to do so.
The midfielder is already thought to be high on the list of potential skippers this season, following his £600,000 move from Premier League Fulham.
But, while Greening says he would love the chance to fill the void left by the departure of Paul McKenna, he believes the captaincy is something to be earned, rather than demanded.
"I was captain at West Brom for two years," said 32-year-old Greening. "And Steve McClaren will know me well, because I have played under him for five years at Manchester United and Middlesbrough.
"But there are probably other players who deserve the captaincy more than me.
"I would rather come into the club, settle in and try to play well. I hope I can use my experience to help the team, if I can.
"But when I was captain at West Brom, it was in my fourth full season at the club.
"I knew the club at that point and, when I got the armband, I felt as though I had earned it, you know?
"I think there are a few players ahead of me in the pecking order at Forest; players who deserve it more than me.
"If the manager tells me he wants me to be captain, I am obviously not going to turn it down.
"But, as a player just coming into the club, I think you are sometimes better to have somebody who knows the club already.
"Perhaps in a couple of years' time I might get it."
Greening has signed a three-year contract at the City Ground, which could take him to his 36th birthday.
"There is plenty left in the tanks," said Greening.
"I am a fit guy and, touch wood, I have not had a major injury during my career. The longest I have been out injured is four weeks.
"And I have not missed a day of training at Fulham in two years.
"I played 230 games on the spin for West Brom in five years.
"I am quite lucky in that respect. Fingers crossed that will continue for a couple of years yet."
