Keegan rounds on Chairman Al Fayed critics

Fulham ex-manager Kevin Keegan has rounded on the critics who seem to be trying to force Mohamed Al Fayed out of Fulham.

The London club's owner has become the subject of a campaign in recent weeks as some of Fulham's fans fear they will never return to their beloved Craven Cottage home.

An announcement earlier this week that ambitious development plans for the Cottage have been shelved raised further anger and doubts over Al Fayed's commitment to a club which is currently playing at Loftus Road in a two-year deal which was supposed to allow their old home to be brought in line with Premiership standards.

Yet Keegan cannot believe Fulham's fans have such short memories. The Manchester City boss played a pivotal role in the club's meteoric rise from Division Three to the Premiership, taking them into Division One in the second of his two years with the club before leaving to take the England job.

He doesn't feel Al Fayed has anything to apologise for. "Mohamed Al Fayed doesn't owe Fulham anything," he said.

"I heard someone on a phone-in having a go at Mr Fayed the other day for not developing Craven Cottage. I really wanted to phone up and say something because that club would not be in the position it is without his involvement.

"I really enjoyed my two years with them. Together with Ray Wilkins, we set a lot of club records.

"I want to go down there and get a result but after the match I'll find Mr Fayed and tell him not to listen to one stupid caller who is having a go.

"What he has done for Fulham Football Club is incredible. It cannot and should not be underestimated."
