Steed Malbranque's £4.5million transfer from Lyon to Premiership new boys Fulham has been put on ice after becoming entangled in red tape in France.

The 21-year-old French midfielder, who would be boss Jean Tigana's first big signing of the summer, was expected to be unveiled by the Cottagers either last night or today - but the move has now been postponed until later in the week.

The Londoners were keen to emphasise there is no hitch in the deal, which was initially agreed on Friday, claiming paperwork is the only factor dragging out the move.

Malbranque this afternoon agreed personal terms with Tigana, after undergoing medical checks in London yesterday and this morning.

Fulham spokesperson Sarah Brookes said: "We have come to an agreement in principle with Lyon and an agreement in principle over personal terms.

"It will be later in the week now. We're still waiting for some administrative work to be done in Lyon."

Asked if the player had passed the medical, Brookes added: "I hope to be able to confirm that later in the week."
