Fulham manager Mark Hughes believes Fulham are the perfect 'vehicle' for Steve Sidwell to drive his career forward.

The midfielder has joined the Cottagers on an initial six-month deal, which could be extended through to 2014.

He returns to the capital after enduring frustrating spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa, during which time he has failed to hold down regular first-team football.

The 28-year-old is a player of proven quality, though, and Hughes is confident Fulham will be able to bring the best out of their latest recruit.

r "Steve will be a hungry player after his spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa," he said.

"He feels Fulham is the right vehicle, and we feel that as well. He will give us that threat from midfield that maybe we have lacked.

"Steve can score goals from midfield. He showed that when he was given a run in the team at Reading.

"He gives us a bit of power from midfield because he is a good box-to-box player."
