Fulham's striker Bazza Hayles continues to
be the centre of media speculation that Portsmouth manager Graham Rix is
locked in a battle with close friend Gianluca Vialli to sign £3million-rated
striker Barry.
It is rumoured that Rix, who was Vialli's assistant for three years at Chelsea,
will open talks with Hayles this weekend and hopes to persuade the 29-year-old
striker to move to Fratton Park.
The Pompey boss is desperate to bolster his side's attack after they
only escaped relegation on the final day of last season, and has been given
£12million pound to spend by chairman Milan Mandaric.
Former Bristol Rovers star Hayles scored 18 league goals for Fulham last
season to help Jean Tigana's side romp away with the First Division title.
However, Hayles is third in the striker pecking order at Craven Cottage
behind Louis Saha and Luis Boa Morte and is facing an uncertain future with
Tigana still keen to add another striker to his squad before the start of
next season.
Hayles moved to Fulham from Rovers for £2million
in November 1998. He was the Second Division's top scorer with 26 goals
in 57 games for Rovers in the 1997-98 season, after signing from non-league
Stevenage the previous summer.
It is believed unlikely that Jean Tigana would want to sell him after the
hugely successful championship campaign, and as Jean Tigana is actively
seeking to strengthen his squad rather than weaken it.
