Melville says points are a problem

Fulham, who Wenger said 'should finish in the top third of the table', have now failed to turn their good performances into points on three occasions this season, following draws with Derby and Charlton, a fact not lost on skipper Andy Melville.

"We're a bit fed up with people saying that Fulham are doing well and putting in good performances but we haven't got the points on board, which is more important," he said.

"We should have punished Derby and Charlton, and then we gave Arsenal too much respect in the first half.

"We got away with it a bit as we could have been 2-0 or 3-0 down at the break but we improved after that only for them to show their class in the final 15 minutes.

"There were lessons learned out there for us. Arsenal are obviously one of the best two or three sides in the league and we have to aim that high in the future."

Arsene Wenger insisted his Arsenal side can continue to lead the Premiership after their 3-1 win at Fulham sent them top.

Bolton's defeat at home to Southampton, and champions' Manchester United unsuccessful trip to Newcastle mean that Wenger's side are ahead on goal difference.

Goals from Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp sealed the Gunners' win after Steed Malbranque's equaliser following Fredrik Ljungberg's opener had threatened to propel Fulham to victory.

Wenger declared: "I think we can stay there. We have played three times away and only twice at home, so why not?

"We want to stay there and I believe we have the potential to do that."

Wenger said he is more confident of snatching the title away from Old Trafford than he has been in recent seasons.

"We look more solid away from home than last year and that's quite positive. It also looks as though everybody else is dropping points so it could be closer than last year.

"We must also keep our home strength to keep challenging for the title. But this win is good for our confidence as we have a vital Champions League game against Schalke on Wednesday."
