Premier League MatchDay 33 Review ~ 13th -14th April 2013 Premier League, Match Reviews Soccernet/SkySports/Sporting Life

Premier League MatchDay 33 kicked off on Saturday with Arsenal making it seven wins from their last eight league outings with a 3-1 triumph over Norwich, lifting them above Chelsea and Tottenham. Goals from Mikel Arteta, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski did the damage for Arsene Wenger's men, who trailed to Michael Turner's opener until the 85th minute.

Aston Villa have only managed to put three points between themselves and the bottom three - having played two extra games - after a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Villa Park. Charles N'Zogbia handed Paul Lambert's side the lead on home soil but a Fabian Delph own goal pegged them back.

Everton's dream of Champions League football remains a realistic prospect after a 2-0 win at home to QPR moved them within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham. David Moyes' men have played the extra game, but strikes from Darron Gibson and Victor Anichebe intensified the pressure. Defeat for QPR leaves them seven points from safety with five games to play

Reading are in the same position as QPR, on 24 points, after they drew 0-0 with Liverpool at the Madejski Stadium. Liverpool's outside hopes of securing European football for next season are surely now over after Reading 'keeper Alex McCarthy had a stormer.

Southampton and West Ham failed to leapfrog Fulham into the top half, drawing 1-1 at St Mary's. Gaston Ramirez's goal pushed Saints ahead but Andy Carroll pegged them back.

Premier League MatchDay 33 continued on Sunday with Sunderland taking the spoils on North East derby day, with Stephane Sessegnon, Adam Johnson and David Vaughan earning them a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park. Many of those on the field were experiencing Tyne-Wear rivalries for the first time, while Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio was thrown into the gladiatorial arena in just his second game in charge.

Manchester United moved 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League after a comfortable 2-0 victory at free-falling Stoke. Michael Carrick gave them a perfect start before Robin Van Persie ended his own personal goal drought with a second half penalty. Tony Pulis' side currently sit three points above the trapdoor, but they have played two games more than third-bottom Wigan Athletic.

15:00 - Arsenal (0) 3 Norwich (0) 1

Arsenal boosted their UEFA Champions League hopes after a dramatic 3-1 victory which leaves Norwich still embroiled in the relegation battle.

The Gunners have been in fine form recently and had Jack Wilshere back in the starting line-up, but they were frustrated by an organised Norwich side in the first half at Emirates Stadium and created few chances apart from an Olivier Giroud header which hit the woodwork.

It got even better for the Canaries in the 56th minute as Michael Turner headed in a Robert Snodgrass free-kick to stun the Arsenal faithful. But Arsenal, who were beaten in the reverse fixture at Carrow Road earlier in the season, were awarded a penalty which incensed Norwich in the 85th minute for a tug by Kei Kamara on Giroud, and Mikel Arteta stepped up slot home the spot-kick.

A Sebastien Bassong own goal on 88 minutes put the Gunners in front following an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross, and there was still time for Lukas Podolski to fire in a third which takes Arsene Wenger's men one point above London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

15:00 - Aston Villa (0) 1  Fulham (0) 1

Aston Villa inched further clear of the drop zone but had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham.

Christian Benteke squandered a good opportunity and Charles N'Zogbia had a shot repelled by Mark Schwarzer in a goalless first half, but Villa were not to be denied and took the lead in the 55th minute. N'Zogbia, playing in place of the injured Gabriel Agbonlahor, grabbed the goal as Fulham failed to get the ball clear and he curled an exquisite finish inside the far post with his left foot.

However, Villa's good work was undone after 66 minutes when Fabian Delph inadvertently glanced a header into his own net from a corner to the near post, leaving Paul Lambert's men perched precariously three points above the bottom three.

Aston Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Baker, Bennett, Westwood, Delph, Bowery (Holman 69), Weimann (Bent 76), N'Zogbia (Syll a 68), Benteke.

15:00 - Everton (1) 2 QPR (0) 0

Everton are also still in contention for a top-four finish after moving to within three points of Chelsea and Spurs thanks to a 2-0 triumph at home to QPR.

Harry Redknapp lamented QPR's cruel luck after Shaun Maloney's late equaliser for Wigan last weekend, and fortune went against his side once more to give Everton the breakthrough at Goodison Park, with Darron Gibson's 40th-minute strike taking a wicked deflection off Clint Hill to wrong-foot Julio Cesar.

An Everton onslaught at the start of the second period was rewarded in the 56th minute as Sylvain Distin headed towards goal and Victor Anichebe flicked it on to beat Cesar, with QPR unable to respond and left seven points adrift of safety with just five games remaining.

Everton: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Mirallas (Naismith 86), Osman (Jelavic 81), Gibson, Pienaar, Fellaini, Anichebe.

15:00 - Reading (0) 0 Liverpool (0) 0

Reading also appear destined to be playing Championship football next season after playing out a goalless stalemate with Liverpool.

After a minute's silence at the Madejski Stadium to mark the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, Liverpool started the match strongly but were thwarted by a series of Alex McCarthy saves as Reading somehow reached half-time still on level terms. The Royals looked more solid after the break and held on to collect their first point under Nigel Adkins, but they could not find the goal they realistically needed to stay in with a chance.

Reading: McCarthy, Gunter, Mariappa, Morrison, Kelly, McCleary, Karacan (Carrico 57), Guthrie, McAnuff, Pogrebnyak (Blackman 73), Hunt (Le Fondre 79).

Attendance: 24,139

Referee: Mark Clattenburg (Tyne & Wear).

15:00 - Southampton (0) 1 West Ham (0) 1

Southampton and West Ham played out a 1-1 draw which keeps both teams comfortably placed in mid-table.

Rickie Lambert came closest to opening the scoring before the break as Jussi Jaaskelainen produced a great stop from close range, before Gaston Ramirez made it 1-0 on 59 minutes with a goal that was created fortunately but finished clinically.

The Uruguayan's initial shot was blocked but the ball broke kindly for him as he darted through on goal and calmly lifted his shot over the onrushing Jaaskelainen. Andy Carroll quickly drew the Hammers level with a deflected free-kick but neither side could find a winner.

Paolo Di Canio launched his Tyne-Wear derby career in spectacular style as Sunderland blasted their way past Newcastle to ease their relegation fears.

Newcastle were second best throughout, and while Alan Pardew's side remain five points above the drop zone, they cannot afford to take their survival for granted with five games to go.

14:05 - Stoke (0) 0 Man Utd (1) 2 - Sky1

Manchester United moved to within seven points of securing a 20th league title with a routine win that pushed Stoke further towards the relegation zone.

Robin van Persie made sure of the points with a second-half penalty that ended a run of 10 games without a goal.

That came after Michael Carrick had given United the perfect start, prodding home from a scrappy corner. The result leaves Stoke only three points above the bottom three, having won two of the last 17 league matches.
