JOHN ARNE RIISE has explained why he has opted to join Liverpool rather than newly-promoted Fulham, suggesting he fears the Londoners could struggle in The Premiership.

The Monaco midfielder had been lined up to play under Jean Tigana again, at Craven Cottage, but there was always the suspicion that Gerard Houllier would make a late bid for his signature.

"Liverpool have a better reputation," said the 20-year-old. "It is a safe environment to join. "I feel that Liverpool is a better alternative. They have shown that they are good with young players. "Fulham are newly promoted and could find themselves in trouble,"

The issue of regular first team football does not bother Riise, who is expected to play on the left-hand side for Houllier's Merseysiders, paving the way for Bernard Diomede's exit.

"That is solely up to me," he added. "And I am willing to take that chance."

The Norwegian international is in England with his mother and adviser, Berit, and agent Einar Baardsen.

"I have been in touch with manager Gerard Houllier a lot over the last few days," stated Baardsen. "We have been told by Monaco that Liverpool is the only alternative. "We have just started and we have many hours of work ahead of us. "We will have to see how long it takes. We will agree personal terms, we know that because it has been discussed over the phone. "We haven't turned anyone down yet but, if all goes well today, he will become a Liverpool player."
