England Under-21s demonstrated that the well
of young talent in this country runs deep as a severely depleted side overcame
Mexico 3-0 in a friendly international at Filbert Street.
Fulham's Sean Davis was given the honour of being England U21's Captain
for the evening. The impressive Davis fulfilled his set mission of holding
the ball in the midfield and also displayed his talent for probing opposition
defences.
As England pressed for a second goal they came close to increasing their
lead after a cross from the right, this a set piece delivered by Sean Davies
which resulted in Navarrette tipping Matthew Upson's header over the crossbar.
Davies's impressive probings met with a greater reward in the 74th minute
when his through-ball allowed Defoe to spring the visitors' offside trap
and slide the ball past Navarrette to put England firmly in control.
