Despite the efforts of the young Fulham midfielder David Platt's unbeaten
record as England Under-21 coach ended when his side were beaten 1-0 by
Portugal.
Portuguese defender Tonel headed home the winner on 39 minutes, getting
on the end of Candido Costa's free kick from the right at the far post.
The visitors also hit the post through Ednilson as England disappointed
during the first half.
However, they fought back after the break against a side they will face
at this summer's European Championships.
Platt said "We played into the hands of a European team who defended
deep and then suckered us on the counter-attack.
"You are better off losing a friendly rather than a competitive game
but we will only find out if there are any positives if we learn something
from what happened.
