Wilkinson's troops were quite simply second
best in all departments and struggled to cope with the slick one-touch play
of the Greeks who have regained top spot in the group after registering
their fourth win in six games.
Fulham's Sean Davis tried to delay the inevitable with a great tackle to
deny Giannis Amanatidis in the area in the first 15 minutes and only he
and John Terry emerged with much credit.
England face a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the European
Championship 2002 finals after being outclassed by Greece. after the home
side went three up within an hour in the European Championship qualifier
on Tuesday.
The defeat leaves England in third place on eight points, behind Greece
on 13 and Germany on ten points. England's first defeat of the tournament
left them needing a positive result when they meet Germany in September if they
are to have any chance of qualifying through the play-offs.
