Fulham's young midfield star Sean Davis had
another good game for England U21 when they played Germany last night.
Sean's performance will only further enhance his chance of getting a call
to join the senior England squad during the coming season.
A crowd of 18,000 - the highest for an under-21 match in Germany - saw England
come close to taking the lead in the ninth minute when David Prutton's
powerful low shot was parried at full stretch by Timo Hillderband.
But the Germans gradually gained the ascendancy with Borowski causing problems
with his runs from central midfield and Rahn having acres of space on the
left flank.
England were happy to go in at half time without conceding a goal.
The English came out for the second half
with a far better attitude and in the 55th minute Sean Davis pressed forward
and made another excellent forward pass to Cole who gave England the lead
with a class goal.
The control of the game change to England and Germany were left to chase
for the ball as England had had to do in the first half.
With the England squad appearing to be safely home German defender Christoph
Metzelder equalised in the last minute.
But with true British grit Sean Davis pressed forward again and rather than
score the last minute winner, as he has more than once for his club, he
set up Jeffers who drilled home a low shot
with only seconds remaining.
It means that England are now only two points behind the Germans
in the qualifying group, from which the top two go into a play-off, and
they have a priceless game in hand.
