Fulham Manager Jean Tigana opted to keep his counsel after watching his team threw away a 2-0 lead at Southampton, sending his assistant Christian Damiano to speak to the press instead - and he was not short of an excuse or two.

Damiano revealed why Tigana hauled off Knight in the second half, replacing him with Abdeslam Ouaddou, who normally plays right-back.

"We changed Zat as we felt he was having difficulty staying confident," he said.

"We had difficulty in the air at the back. They played long balls with Beattie as the target and our defenders had trouble with their concentration.

"Our defenders needed to fight their strikers more, to disturb them. As soon as Southampton got a goal back, we were in trouble. We also had tactical and technical problems, which need to be resolved quickly.

"It was difficult with the wind, but we weren't able to adapt.

"We started in July and have now had 21 games. It's a long season and we have about 25 games to go, so we're trying to rest players."
