It gave McCarthy's men a play-off place at
the least and left the Dutch wondering how they had failed to beat a side
reduced to 10 men after Gary Kelly was dismissed after 57 minutes for two
bookable fouls Marc Overmars
Ironically, it was Fulham's Steve Finnan, the man brought on to fill Kely's
right-back role who layed on the goal with a low cross that evaded everybody
and fell perfectly for McAteer to curl the sweetest of right-foot finishes
past Fulham's Edwin van der Sar.
It sparked an expected orange onslaught, but somehow the Irish 10-men held
firm.
The day belonged to the Irish and the result sparked one of the biggest
parties Dublin will have ever seen.
When asked to describe how he felt after the final whistle, McCarthy said:
"I am not articulate enough to do it. I am running on adrenaline.
"It was amazing... it was aggressive... we dug in. "The scribes
will find words for it tomorrow but I am so proud of the team." "This
is a very proud moment but it's what the lads have done for me."
