Fulham midfielder Steve Sidwell has spoken of his pleasure in his sides 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium on Saturday, despite admitting that it was not the Cottagers' best performance.

Goals from Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele gave Martin Jol's side the win and Sidwell is delighted with what he describes as a "typical away victory" in which his team sat back and pounced on the counter.

"It wasn't our best performance of the season but we got the victory out of it," Sidwell told the club's official website.

"There have been games this year where we've played well but lost, so it's just a matter of getting the three points.

"It was a typical away victory. You sit back and let the home team come out - we knew we would catch them on the break with our attacking pace and it worked."

The former Reading, Chelsea and Aston Villa man has made a keen impression at Craven Cottage this season, being the preferred central midfield partner for skipper Danny Murphy since Jol's arrival, and he is looking forward to his side putting in improved performances in the coming weeks.

"We rode our luck at times because they had a few chances but sometimes you need that," continued Sidwell.

"We knew before the game that it was a big match and we had to be resolute, we knew our job was to keep it nice and tight.

"The game plan worked but we would have liked our whole game to be a bit better.

"With the teams that we've played and the performances we've put in, we'd like to be more up the table and have more wins on the board. We're going into a tough period at the moment and will be playing a lot of the top teams but I'm sure that if we keep playing the way we played so far this season, we won't come up short.

"We're always going to create chances, but it's all about taking them. You look at the performance against Everton, on another day that's 2-1 to us if Bobby scores.

"We'll just keep plugging away, we're not going to change our style of play, we like to get the ball down and play - there's just a few areas that we need to pick up on."
