Fulham FC statement
Everyone at Fulham was saddened to learn of the passing of Club legend Fred Callaghan on Tuesday afternoon.

Born just down the road in Parsons Green, Fred gave a decade of service to the Whites as a player, making his debut in a 2-2 draw away to Aston Villa in March 1964, the first of 336 appearances he would go on to rack up for the Club.

Nicknamed The Tank on account of his storming runs down the wing and dangerous crosses, Fred primarily appeared at left-back or left-half.

He started 45 of our 46 league matches as Fulham won promotion from Division Three in 1970/71, and although he was not a regular scorer, his goal at Charlton Athletic the following season helped secure a 2-2 draw which effectively saved us from relegation, at the expense of the Addicks.

Following his retirement from playing, Fred became a London taxi driver, while he also had a spell working at Craven Cottage as a host in our hospitality lounges.

A hugely engaging character, Fred always had time for fans and was forever happy to share an anecdote or joke.

Our thoughts and prayers are now with Fred’s wife Hazel, his children and family and friends.
