Fulham Manager Kit Symons says Fulham must take it a step at a time in a bid to climb the Championship ladder.
The Cottagers go into today's clash against Huddersfield still scrapping at the wrong end of the table, despite a five-game unbeaten run.
Owner Shahid Khan has tasked Symons with securing a top-six finish as they try to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
"I would expect the chairman to be ambitious and set his sights very high," said Symons. "That's what we are all doing.
"The poor start we had, taking just one point from 21, gives us a lot of work to do. We will keep trying to improve.
"It's one thing at a time. We're very close to the bottom, so we can't sit back and think we've cracked it.
"We're well up there in current form guides but we are playing catch up. We've had to put in a good shift to get where we are now.
"If you can do the gradual improvement you work yourself away from the drop zone and closer to where you want to go."
