Former Fulham defender, Liam Rosenior, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.

The full-back, whose professional playing career spanned 16 years, spent his last three seasons with Brighton but left this summer as his contract expired.

He came through the youth system at Bristol City, for whom father Leroy also played, and scored in their Football League Trophy final win over Carlisle United in 2003.

Rosenior then made a move to Premiership Fulham that year staying until 2007 and after appearing 87 times and scoring one goal he moved to Reading and then Hull, with loan spells at Torquay and Ipswich sandwiched in between.

His most successful spell came at Hull, where he made over 140 appearances as the Tigers won promotion to the Premier League, made the FA Cup final and played in Europe.

He then joined Brighton, where he saw out his career with another promotion. At the end of it all, Rosenior made close to 450 senior appearances.

Although he didn't get a chance with the England senior team, he earned seven caps at Under-21 level between 2005 and 2007.

He made it into the squad for the 2007 European Under-21 Championship, but only made one appearance, as a substitute in the semi final against Holland.

'Undoubtedly, it is a sad day for any professional footballer when the time comes to stop playing. However, I have enjoyed a long career and feel privileged to have earned a living doing something that I love,' Rosenior wrote on Twitter.

He added: 'I am so lucky to have lived my childhood dream and I am now ready for the next chapter.

'To the managers, coaches, players, backroom staff and supporters of every club I have had the good fortune to represent, I sincerely thank you for the lessons, happiness, memories and incredible support I have received in my career.'

Rosenior will now embark on a new chapter of his life as assistant coach to Simon Rusk with Brighton's Under-23 side.

Alongside this, he has revealed that he will be fulfilling a new media analyst role at Sky Sports.
