If Gillingham's players never see Fulham's Matt Smith again, one suspects it will be too soon.

The centre forward terrorised the Gills to score all four goals in Bristol City's 4-2 win at Gillingham in the first leg of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Area final.

The on-loan Fulham striker sealed his first career hat-trick five minutes after the break, beating Gills 'keeper with an outrageous back-heel to add insult to injury.

Smith netted his fourth with a thunderous volley from the edge of the box

The 6ft 5in striker boasts eight goals in his last four outings for City and it will be a major surprise if manager Steve Cotterill does not ask Fulham boss Kit Symons for permission to extend the loan deal beyond the end of this month.

After the match, Smith said: "It was a special night. I'm really, really happy to get my first hat-trick.

"It's been a long time coming, I've had a few braces along the way and never quite managed it so I'm delighted to get it, and the fourth was the cherry on the cake, so it was a pleasing evening."
