Referee Stephen Martin |
Referee Stephen Martin’s father and grandfather were both Football League officials and encouraged Steve to take up the whistle in
2003.
Mr. Martin’s rapid rise saw his appointment to the EFL assistant referee list in
2007 and to the National League referee list in the same year. After four years he became an EFL referee and has taken charge of over 200 games and is now part of the Select Group 2 professional officials.
The last time Ref Martin was in charge of a Fulham game was in April 2018 for the 1-0 away win at Sheffield Wednesday. He booked two players both from Wednesday. Mitrovic scored the only goal assisted by Ryan Sessegnon.
Earlier in the season, December 2017, Mt Martin also refed the game when Fulham were beaten 1-0 at Sunderland . He booked one Sunderland player and two Fulham players, Ojo (encr,60), Fredericks (arg,90). Sunderland, then managed by Chris Coleman, had gone 21 home games without a win before obliging Fulham turned up.
Earlier in September Mr Martin refed the 2-1 away defeat at Burton Albion when he booked Sheyi Ojo for simulation and a Burton player for a foul.
Mr Martin last refed Charlton in early December 2019 when they lost 1-0 away at Middlesbrough when he booked four players, three of which wore Charlton shirts, Gallagher, Pratley and Leko.
Last season he refed 35 games and dished out 84 yellows and 3 reds, so a well below average 2.4 yellows per game. So far this season he has refed 21 games and issued 48 yellows, so a similar average of 2.3 yellows per game, and 2 red cards.
His busiest game in recent times was in early December 2019 when he booked three Derby players, four Sheffield Wednesday players and red carded Odubajo of Sheffield Wednesday, a second yellow, in the 90th minute. The result was 1-1.
In December 2016 Mr Martin refed the Nottingham Forest v Newcastle game which Newcastle lost 2-1. Newcastle fans were not happy so they "trolled " him on Twitter unfortunately a number of them got the wrong Steve Martin over in Hollywood.
