Referee Stephen Martin |
Referee Stephen Martin’s father and grandfather were both Football League officials and encouraged Steve to take up the whistle in 2002.
Mr. Martin’s rapid rise saw his appointment to the EFL assistant referee list in 2008 and to the National League referee list in the same year. After four years he became an EFL referee and has taken charge of over 150 games and is now part of the Select Group 2 professional officials.
The last time Ref Martin was in charge of a Fulham game was in December when Fulham were beaten 1-0 at Sunderland . He booked one Sunderland player and two Fulham players, Ojo (encr,60), Fredericks (arg,90).
Earlier in September Mr Martin refed the 2-1 away defeat at Burton Albion when he booked Sheyi Ojo for simulation and a Burton player for a foul.
Mr Martin last reffed Sheffield Wednesday in their 1-0 away defeat at Birmingham in September and his cards stayed in his pocket.
Last season he refed 35 games and dished out 78 yellows and 3 reds, so a well below average 2.2 yellows per game. So far this season he has refed 35 games and issued 83 yellow and 2 red cards.
His busiest game in recent times was in October when he booked three Wolves players, four Preston players and red carded Browne of Preston in the 90th minute. Wolves won 3-2.
In December 2016 Mr Martin reffed the Nottingham Forest v Newcastle game which Newcastle lost 2-1. Newcastle fans were not happy so they "trolled " him on Twitter unfortunately a number of them got the wrong Steve Martin over in Hollywood.
