Referee Stephen Martin |
Referee Stephen Martin’s father and grandfather were both Football League officials and encouraged Steve to take up the whistle in 2003.
Mr. Martin’s rapid rise saw his appointment to the EFL assistant referee list in
2007 and to the National League referee list in the same year. After four years he became an EFL referee and has taken charge of over 200 games and is now part of the Select Group 2 professional officials.
The last time Ref Martin was in charge of a Fulham game was in January 2020 when we drew 0-0 away at Charlton. Mr Martin booked one player from each team, the Fulham man was Kevin McDonald.
Prior to the Charlton game it was nearly two years, April 2018, since Mr Martin refed Fulham in 1-0 away win at Sheffield Wednesday. He booked two players both from Wednesday. Mitrovic scored the only goal assisted by Ryan Sessegnon.
Earlier in the season, December 2017, Mt Martin also refed the game when Fulham were beaten 1-0 at Sunderland . He booked one Sunderland player and two Fulham players, Ojo (encr,60), Fredericks (arg,90). Sunderland, then managed by Chris Coleman, had gone 21 home games without a win before obliging Fulham turned up.
Earlier in September Mr Martin refed the 2-1 away defeat at Burton Albion when he booked Sheyi Ojo for simulation and a Burton player for a foul.
Mr Martin last refed Reading in March 2021 when they drew 1-1 away at Nottingham Forest, one player from the Forest team was booked.
Last season he refed 30 games and dished out 68 yellows and 3 reds, so a well below average 2.7 yellows per game.
His busiest game in recent times was in August 2021 when he booked three players from each team in the Bradford vrs Oldham game.
In December 2016 Mr Martin refed the Nottingham Forest v Newcastle game which Newcastle lost 2-1. Newcastle fans were not happy so they "trolled " him on Twitter unfortunately a number of them got the wrong Steve Martin over in Hollywood.
