Referee Martin Atkinson, the Bradford Yorkshire-born referee, started his refereeing career at the relatively early age of 16 years, as the local team did not have a referee to oversee matches. By 2003-2004, he joined the national list of referees.
Only two years after his Conference debut Atkinson was promoted to the list of Select Group Referees in 2005 refereed his first Premier League game in April 2005 and he then joined the FIFA list of referees in 2006.
Ref Atkinson last refed Fulham in the Championship Play Off Final against Cardiff in August 2020. He booked two Cardiff players and seven Fulham players, Harrison Reed (29,f), Tom Cairney (67,f), Michael Hector (98,f), Anthony Knockaert (102,f), Aleksandar Mitrovic (104,arg), Ivan Cavaleiro (f) andMarek Rodak (tw), his busiest game of the season. Brilliant Joe Bryan scored both Fulham goals
The Cardiff game was the only Fulham game Mr Atkinson refed in that season but in the previous season, 2018/2019, he refed Fulham four times ending with the 2-1 away defeat at Burnley in January 2019. Fulham players scored all three goals while Mr Atkinson booked three players, two of whom were Calum Chambers (34,f)and Cyrus Christie (65,f).
Just a few weeks earlier Mr Atkinson refed our
0-0 away draw at Newcastle in December 2018 when he yellow carded three players, two from Fulham, Aboubakar Kamara (84,f) and Jean Seri (87,f).
Prior to the Newcastle game Mr Atkinson refed the League Cup 2-0 defeat up at Man City when he booked one player, Vincent Kompany for a foul
He also refed the home 1-1 draw with Watford in September. He booked two Fulham defenders, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Alfie Mawson and one Watford player, all for fouls.
Mr Atkinson was also the referee for our Championship PlayOff 2nd Leg in 2016/2017 when Reading won 1-0. In that game Mr Atkinson booked two Reading players and Kevin McDonald (38,f), Stefan Johansen (58,f) and Scott Malone (65,d) of Fulham.
Man Utd has been refed three times by Mr atkinson, so far this season, the last game was Man Utd's 2-0 homw defeat by Man city on 6th Jan 2021. Mr atkins yellow carded two players from each side.
Last season Ref Atkinson officiated at 36 matches issuing 110 yellow cards and 5 reds, some 3.0 yellows per game. So far this season in 15 games he has waved his yellow card 36 times, so an average of 2.4 yellows a game, and his red card two times.
His busiest game recently was in August 2020, the Fulham vrs Cardiff Play Off final when he booked nine players seven of them from Fulham.
