Fulham striker Marcello Trotta hopes his loan spell at Brentford can boost his chances of breaking into Fulham's first-team squad.

The Italian striker returned to Griffin Park for a second spell this week after bagging nine goals in 21 starts last season.

Trotta was handed a starting spot for Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Bradford, impressing in the opening half an hour before being sacrificed after keeper David Button's red card.

However, the talented 20-year-old hopes to get more chances to catch the eye and impress Craven Cottage chief Martin Jol.

He said: "We signed a lot of good players in the summer I knew my playing time would be restricted.

"The manager wanted me to go out on loan and play. There were other clubs interested but Brentford was the best choice for me.

"Last season I wasn't an automatic choice and I will have to fight for my place in the first 11 again this time.

"That competition keeps everyone on their toes and can only benefit the squad.

"But hopefully I can get some games, score some goals and help the team win promotion."
